CHAPTER 2: GEOGRAPHY

3. YENI BAYAZID DISTRICT

One of districts Irevan province was Yeni Bayazid (Kavar). All territory of this district with 15th till 19th century (1828) entered in Irevan khanate and referred to Goychay mahal. After a gain of Armenia by Russia, Goychay mahal under name Yeni Bayazid 160 was part of Irevan province. In 1919, by transfer of district of Armenia to its territory entered Basarkechar (Vardenis), Yeni Bayazid (Kamo) districts and separate villages Ahtin (Razdan) districts. As the present Ahtin district is part of Irevan district, and on all Azerbaijan villages of other three districts are above already given (Basarkechar, Yeni Bayazid and Martunin) on districts separate articles are given in alphabetic order. Azerbaijanians completely lived in one of these three districts, Basarkechar, and in two others till 1918-1920. There were ten Azerbaijan villages, during time of Armenian-Muslim war all Azerbaijan villages had been destroyed, plundered, the population of these villages had undergone to violent exile. In the Azerbaijan villages Armenians had been placed by arrived of Bayazid, a province of Turkey; the name of district had been renamed in Yeni Bayazid (Hor Bayazid).

BASARKECHAR DISTRICT

Basarkechar (Vardenis, 1969) - administrative district in Armenian SSR. It is organized on September 9, 1930. It borders, on the one hand, with about. Goycha (Sevan), Krasnoselsky and Martunin districts of Armenia, and from three sides - with Kalbajar and Gadabay districts of Azerbaijan. The district is 1151 km2, the population is 60633 persons (1985), center is Basarkechar (Vardenis).

The brief history - Territory of district before entered in Zod (Armenians named Sod) district. After defeat of Arshakid (428), Zod district was attached to Arsakh mahal. In 8th -16th centuries and short time in 16th-17th centuries was under authority Melik Shahnazaryanov, and then Turkish, Tatar, especially long time, Aghgoyunlu and Garagoyunlu. In 17th-18th centuries the territory of district was part Goychay mahal of Irevan khanate, since 1849 - in structure Yeni Bayazid district of Irevan province. The most valuable historical monuments were kept in Basarkechar district. The rests of serf strengthening concern to them close to Godakbulag and Dashkand, the Albanian church concerning to 9th-10th centuries, Khach dashlar (crosswise stones) in village Beyuk Mazra (881st year), the Albanian church at village Zod. The territory of district which was taking place till 1920 was in structure of the Azerbaijan Republic. Then, it had been presented to Armenia, and since 1921 till 1930. The district was in structure of Yeni Bayazid district, and after 1930 is an independent district.

The population - Historically only Azerbaijanians lived in district. Only after accommodation of a part of the Armenian emigrants who had moved in 1828-1829 from Iran and Turkey, in Yeni Bayazid district and Basarkechar district Armenians had started to live. It was recognized by Z. Korkodyan, the author of the book «the Population of the Soviet Armenia». He specified, that there were 44 villages, and 4367 Azerbaijanians lived in these villages and only 9 Armenians 161 in 1831 in territory of Basarkechar district. On the basis of the peace treaties made in 1828 with Iran – Turkmanchay contract - willows of 1829 with Turkey - Edirne contract, - resettlement of Armenians in Transcaucasia was authorized.

The statistical information show, that number of the Armenian population in Basarkechar gradually increased and from 0,5 % in 1831 had risen up to 26 % in 1988. In 1873 Azerbaijanians made 11746 persons, Armenians - 3145 persons, in 1886 accordingly 16139 and 4148, in 189720395 and 5116. In 1914 as a whole the population of district (Azerbaijanians and Armenians together) made 33918 persons.

As a result of Russian-Turkish war of 1826-1828 and having place at the end of a century (1893-1894) in Turkey the Armenian disorders moved from Turkey and Iran, the Armenian emigrants were placed in district Basarkechar. N.Shavrov writes: «After the termination of war of 1828-1829 within two years have moved 40000 Iranian and 84600 Turkish Armenians in Transcaucasia and had placed them on the best grounds Yelizavetpolsky and Irevan province. Almost there was no Armenian population in these places... These Armenians were placed in a mountain part of province Yelizavetpolsky (Mountainous Garabagh) and on bank of of Goycha (Sevan). It is necessary to have in view of, that besides officially moved - 124000 Armenians, here had informally moved many Armenians. Thus, the aggregate number moved exceeds 200000 persons».

After Armenian-Muslim war in Baku in 1905, in May - June of the same year in Nakhchivan, in Irevan district and Irevan province, it was especial on an instigation arrived Armenians, had extended interethnic difference. Hundreds Azerbaijan villages of Irevan province, including many villages Goychay mahal on bank of of Lake, had been destroyed, the part of the population was exterminated, and the part had been compelled to be rescued by flight to Iran and Turkey. Using this opportunity, arrived Armenians had started to tidy up historical Azerbaijan villages to the hands, to be placed and live in them.

With coming to power dashnaks in 1918 the mad idea of creation of "Great Armenia», and with this purpose exile of local population, creation of the Armenian majority in provinces Irevan and formation of it had even more amplified. During direct management of dashnak governments, Armenians in 1918-1919 had wiped out tens villages of Basarkechar district making a basis of Goychay district, had expelled the population, having subjected to persecutions and tortures.

The tragedy caused by actions dashnak government in Basarkechar, we transferred language of documents. From an affair of office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (1919, business ¹ 65, 4th section), describing violence over attitudes of the Muslim population of Garabagh and the Irevan district adjoining to province Ganja, accomplished by Armenians and army of Armenian Republic.

«The application in the Ministry of Internal Affairs from January 23, 1919 of tenants Dashkand, Yeni Bayazid district of Irevan province Mashadi Gasim Haji Karim and Boyuk Ali Haji Mirza Alakbar as follows:

The Armenian government led by officials together with army had destroyed and had reduced to ruins mentioned below Muslim villages: Zagali, Dashkand, Zod, Huseyn-gulu-Aghali, Sariyal, Boyuk Garagoyunlu, Kichik Garagoyunlu. Ashaghi Norchamor, Yeni Ket, Kelbashi, Kama - Bilal, Aghkilsa, Zarzibil, Inakdagh, Sultanali gishlaghi, Oghruja, Boyuk Mazra. Kichik Mazra, Kasaman, Shishgaya, Satanakhach, Gizil Bank...

Completely burnt mentioned below villages: Orkulu, Alchali, Kamilli, Yarpizli, Ganli, Karkibash, Chakhirli, Kefli Kurd, Boyuk Mazra».

Armenian historian A.Lalayan in work "Counterrevolutionary" Dashnaksutun» and imperialistic war of 1914-1918», characterizing two consequences of movement of "volunteers", writes:

«1. Movement of "volunteers" is characterized by that dashnak groups led by blood-sucker khmbapet (Andranik pasha, Amazasp and others) had shown a maximum of "boldness" in destruction of Turkish women and children, old men and patients. Seized dashnak groups Turkish villages "are cleared" of alive people, reduce to ruins together with the disfigured victims. One of dashnak "heroes" from Yeni Bayazid Bàhram so described "courage" in 1920:

«I, in Basarkechar, (Basarkechar - one of districts of Armenia - A. L.) not considering anything, had exterminated the Turkish population, - this swaggered dashnak "bandit". - However sometimes I regret a bullet. The best way against these dogs that after fight of all survived is necessary to throw in well, from above there to throw heavy stones that from them did not remain any traces». The gangster continues: «I have acted: all men, women and children all over again had killed, then with them had filled well and from above had covered stones... »

Thus, one of consequences of dashnak movements of volunteers is a destruction of tens Turkish workers.

Extract from the report the representative on the Muslim population of 5th site of mountain strip Ismayil Sultanov, chief of Ganja district:

«Since April, 13 of this year, an army of republic Ararat have gone over to the offensive against peace Muslim population Yeni Bayazid district of district. The purpose was to clear east and northern part of Lake Goycha from Moslems living here.

Now 22 villages with the population 60000 persons are destroyed, burnt, and the population is exterminated. The unfortunate Muslim population is ruthlessly destroyed by fire of the Armenian armies which have put before self the purpose - destruction of Moslems Goycha - and carrying out this purpose. The persons are horrified, seeing such atrocities of the Armenian government and Armenians against the last neighbors and citizens - Moslems taking place in their citizenship. The Armenian armies at all do not leave in the alive Moslems seized by them, subject to their inconceivable tortures and, except for some women and teenagers - girls, kill children, old men, young; the economy, property of the population is grasped by insatiable Armenian armies, distributed among themselves, and survived are pursued by armies. Few people filter on suburbs of 5th site of Ganja district and inhabitants of the others of 17 villages run in mountainous a part of Javanshir district, even more precisely, the inhabitants of 7-8 villages pursued by the Armenian armies, at snow tops of 5th site of Ganja district, in gorges disappear, perish in the mass order, having remained under a snow. The question of republic Ararat is already solved, in Goychay district any more did not remain Moslems. Now in Yeni Bayazid district was destroyed 84 Muslim villages, from them 22 were destroyed since April 13-20; more than 15 thousand population of villages Dashkand, Gosha Bulag, Sariyagub, Bash Shorja, Ayag Shorja, Soghangulu-Aghali, Aghkilsa, Zod, Gulu Aghali, B.Garagojunlu, K.Garagojunlu, Zarzibil, Chayàhmadli, Inakdagh, GaraIman, Kasaman, Bashkand, Bala Mazra, Boyuk Mazra, Shishgaya, Bash Haji, Garib, Gaya ran, having left without supervision all property, an economy. All these riches have got now to the Armenians, the seized property costs several millions and even billions».

The purpose of all told is definition, true intentions of the Armenian nationalists and this intention will be, that, developing anti-Turkish, anti-Azerbaijan movement to wage vindictive war and this way to create imagined «Great Armenia». It obviously appears in thousand acts of the slaughter provoked dashnak by Armenia in article of newspaper "Azerbaijan" under heading «In republic Ararat». The newspaper writes: «Seven days ago the peasant on them. To a rumble, being in ours GaraIman, informed that the Armenian groups under domination officers of Filimonov and Nishanyov have surrounded Gizil Bank, Subatan and Zagali at night. Under a pretext as if police officer calls, all men have deduced from village, and have started to plunder village. Peasants with entreaty asked, that will execute all their requirements, everything, that they want, if only them have released. In the answer Armenians have let know, that destruction of two-three Muslim villages will not saturate their thirst of revenge. Even if will destroy 30 villages, it incomparably with that blood and with those Armenian victims which took place in September in small street Baku.

For 4 days before Armenians have destroyed these three villages, have brutally killed 4 men and 6 women in village Chamurlu. Besides at men have chopped off heads, and at women have cut off breasts. We have buried corpses.

One woman from who have unworthy cost in village Sharaba, has told, that all men of village have shot, children burnt in tandir. Then from all village have chosen 8 women, have withdrawn them, 20 days held, have outraged upon them, have torn down honor after that have released».

«Destruction of Azerbaijanians by Armenians began for a long time, is lifted on a level of a state policy and has left far beyond Azerbaijan. Whether then it is necessary to be surprised, that dashnak the government only in Armenia (for the period of the 30-month's authority, May 1920) has exterminated 1918-November... 60 % of the Azerbaijan population» .

G.Muradyan, describing gangster actions of the Armenian government at destruction of the Azerbaijan villages on northern bank of near Goycha, wrote: «... As a result of the actions carried out by our government... The population of these villages (Tokhluja, Aghbulag, Ardanish, etc.) has left borders of Armenia. I saw the rest without supervision of village, I there have seen some cats, and also have heard unusual bark of the dogs that have surprised to unusual shrill silence. The population of these villages left, having left on very big sites of landing of a potato, wheat and barley. The government in these villages can collect two million poods wheat and half-million poods of a potato... »

From 26918 Azerbaijanians of Basarkechar expelled from the native ground in 1918-1920, after falling in Armenia dashnak governments in 1922 on the native grounds have managed to return 11413 persons, that is approximately 40 % of all population. Expelled in various districts of Azerbaijan, to Iran, Turkey refugees with the big work have managed to return. However villages in which they before lived, basically have been seized moved in 1915-1918 from Turkey by Armenian - emigrants and since many villages have turned to the mixed villages. For example, till 1919 in Boyuk Mazra, Chakhirli, Gizilvank and Yarpizli the Basarkechar district was not any Armenian. However, having taken advantage of the compelled flight of Azerbaijanians, Armenians have taken hold of their houses. In 1922 in village Boyuk Mazra was 561 persons, in Yarpizli-104 persons, in Gizilvank-207 the persons, and in Chakhirli-363 the Armenian.

This process in those villages extends eventually. In 1931 in village Boyuk Mazra already lived 1193 persons, in Yarpizli - 547 persons, in Gizilvank - 653 Armenians.

At the end of 1930t, the ethnic structure of the population of district has changed for the benefit of Azerbaijanians, and the Azerbaijan population has made more than 70 %. At a kind of it the government of Armenia has addressed to new provocations. Under a kind of resettlement to Armenia campaign of violent eviction of Azerbaijanians to Azerbaijan began Armenians living abroad. However this time courageous resistance of a management (then the first secretary of a district committee Talib Musaev was) Basarkechar district has prevented mass resettlement of Azerbaijanians from district in 1948-1953. In total 3 villages have been moved: Yarpizli, Ganli, Gizilvank, but in these villages it has not been placed any Armenian emigrant. Only 20 families from foreign Armenians it has been placed in with Godakbulag, Girkhbulag and Boyuk Mazra Basarkechar district. However they, having lived six months in these villages, have moved in Irevan.

Despite of eviction from Armenia more than hundred thousand Azerbaijanians, in Basarkechar district till 1988 Azerbaijanians made the majority. Therefore till 1965 the first secretary of a district committee the Azerbaijanians always was. It is necessary to note one more circumstance, that historically 90 % of villages of district were the Azerbaijan villages. So, for example, in 1897 from 47 only 4 were Armenians. And in 1988 from 38 villages 28 were completely the Azerbaijan, 3 villages mixed and only 7 Armenian villages, but Armenians, despite of it, made about 30 % of the population. The secret of it was, that Armenians, basically, Azerbaijanians - in villages lived in the regional center, and. Therefore in the one fifth territories of district Armenians, and on four fifth - Azerbaijanians lived. On a share of Azerbaijanians 15 state farms from 17, 16 collective farms from 18 were necessary. This economy had 97338 hectare of arable lands, 134 hectare of orchards, and 13428 hectare of the irrigated grounds. In 1988, in this economy, there were 75000 sheep, 21000 large horned livestock, and 57000 birds. From 30 high schools 24 functioning in district, from 10 eight-year schools 7 belonged to Azerbaijanians.

In November, 1988 at a level of the republican government, under a management and at direct participation of the party, Soviet organizations, in particular law enforcement bodies, the 42-thousand population of district violently, force of the weapon, taken from them all property (as it has above been specified, estimated in 100 million roubles the property, collective farms, state farms, machine parks, gold mines, more than 3 million one and two-storeyed apartment houses, personal plots, etc.) have been expelled from the native grounds, villages have been plundered, survived were rescued by flight and have found a shelter in Azerbaijan. On mountain roads there were many human losses. The researcher of slaughter of 1988-1989 Arif Yunusov in the newspaper "Express train - chronicle" so characterizes tragedy of Basarkechar: «Slaughter has taken place in 19 districts of Armenia. Besides the majority (40 persons) killed and died falls at Vardenis (Basarkechar) district».

About all Azerbaijan villages in territory of Basarkechar district (both existing and dead) separate articles are given in alphabetic order. 48 villages in district: Allahverdi bay, Altundagh, Aghyokhush, Aghkilsa (Azad), Ashaghi Zagali (Zovak), Ashaghi Shorja, Babajan (Gizilkand), Basarkechar, Bakhar, Boyuk Agha, Bughda tapa, Buzkhana, Boyuk Mazra, Gayabashi, Gamishli, GaraIman, Goshabulag (Kefli), Gizilvank (Chichakli, Màkenis), Girkhbulag (Agunk), Dashkeyti, Dashkand, Dara (Babajan darasi), Azizli, Boyuk Garagoyunlu, Zarvillage (Zarzibil), Zod, Inakdagh (Yenikand), Yarpizli (Ldjavan), Yukhari Zagali (Akhbrazor), Yukhari Shorja, Karvansaray (Samad Agha darasi), Kefli (Ikinji Goshabulag), Karkibash (Shafag), Kichik Garagoyunlu, Kichik Mazra, Godakbulag (Garjakhbur), Goyja, Goysu, Goytapa, Guney (Satanakhach), Gunashli, Narimanli (Huseyngulu Aghali), Pembek, Sariyagub, Seyidlar, Subatan, Tatul gishlaghi, Hasanli, Chakhirli (Sovetagert), Shishgaya.
