KRASNOSELSKY DISTRICT

Krasnoselsky District - administrative district in northeast of Armenia. It is created on December 31, 1937. It borders on Kedabek district of Azerbaijan. Territory was 697 km2, the population was 26264 (1978) persons of 78 % of the population was made by Azerbaijanians. The regional center was Red village. It was in northeast of Lake Goycha (Sevan). It referred to Chambarak till the end of 18th century. There were a lot of men sent to molokan in the end the 18th - beginning of 19th century in Chambarak. Since then, it referred to Mikhailovka and till 1920 was called under this name. There had arrived Red Army and a part of it had been renamed into Red village (Girmizikand) in 1920 in village.

The river Taghdjà (Kedik) flows on district. It has been created on December 31, 1937 as the independent district. Till 1937, it was more true up to an establishment of the Soviet authority in Armenia, the part of its territory entered into the Gazakh district of Ganja province (Chaykand, Golkand, Garagaya, Amirkheyir, Yanigpeye, Beriabad, Jivikhli), a part - in Yeni Bajazid district of Irevan province (Tokhluja, Aghbulag, Shorja, Ardanish, Jil). After an establishment of the Soviet authority, in Armenia, the territory of district was part of Dilijan district of Armenian SSR.

The brief history - territory of Krasnoselsky district in 1785-1825 had been subordinated Irevan khanate (this territory one of ancient settlements oghuz peoples). It was part of Gazakh district of Ganja (Yelizavetpol) province in 1828. These years, it was paid attention to development of this territory. In Muslim villages, including Chaykand, the Russian-Tatar schools which basically allowed secular education had opened. In villages Tohludzha, Aghbulag and Jil had opened mollakhana. This was not a merit of Armenian dashnaks.

It was one bloodier page which had gone down to history of district in 1918. It was continuation of bloody massacre of 1905. The Armenian robbers not looking on anything had destroyed all Turkish (Azerbaijan) population, had collected them in a heap, had stopped in well, burnt alive. Long time, their groans were audible. From these, heart tearing the sounds of leaders of dashnaks enjoyed 154. Alive witness of all these bloody events was the native in 1900 in district Zangazur, in 1936-1938 working as secretary Dilijan of a district committee of a party, Idris Sadigov. He told that Armenians had perfidiously come in 1918-1919 in Ijevan. The purpose was to destroy the Azerbaijanians living in Krasnoselsky district, to burn out houses and violently to expel them from the grounds of their grandfathers. Children, women and old men, on “araba”s going through village the Polad, Chaykand, Garagaya and Amirkheyir, had gathered in Tokhluja. They wanted to reach up to Ardanish, and therefrom, passing through mountains Shahdag to pass to Azerbaijan. But all roads had been closed. National heroes Topal Oruj and Mashadi Jigal from daredevils had organized groups. They with big effort had overcome all difficulties, had cleared roads, had crushed a band of Armenians and through Shahdagh have removed the population to Azerbaijan.

On November 24, 1918, the Governor of Ganja in the telegram wrote: «the Village former Yeni Bayazid Tokhluja was subjected to bombardment by the Armenian armies»155.

These brutal acts of Andranik and its robbers in the Azerbaijan villages of Krasnoselsky district (Golkand, Tokhluja, Shorja, Ardanish, etc.) had found the reflection on pages of a seal and governmental documents156.

The Lake Goycha (Sevan) which had settled down on the north the Azerbaijan villages were not time exposed to a brutal attack of the Armenian gangsters, led by Andranik. It was confirmed with historical documents. Poetically describing gangster actions of the government in destruction and a robbery of the Azerbaijan villages in Armenia to the north of Lake Goycha, Armenian author G.Muradyan wrote: «As a result of active measures of our government, the population of these villages (Tokhluja, Aghbulag, Ardanish, etc.). I saw these villages where were some left cats and dogs who with surprise looked at this dead silence, barked a strange voice. People of these villages raised a potato, wheat and barley. Now, here is deserted. Our government had opportunity to collect from these places from above 2 million poods of a grain and 0,5 million poods of a potato».157 Population of these places with the big work, battling naked hands with the armed insatiable enemies, preserved the honour. They did not want to leave historically primordial territories. «The staying Moslems of villages of Yeni Bayazid district, settled down at bank of. Goycha adequately battled against the Armenian aggression. Subsequently, the Armenian Republic had directed the soldiers armed with guns and machine guns, under command of present military minister of general Saltikova for destruction of these villages and its population protecting the honour. Survived had been expelled from the native centers».

Refugees had returned to the territories, had restored villages, had started to be engaged in economy which had essentially helped development of district.

Discrimination of Azerbaijanians began with 1930 of 20th century when the district Krasnoselsky was formed as independent formation (1937). Welfare and development did not reach the Azerbaijan villages. In spite of the fact that the Azerbaijan villages Jivikhli, Garagaya, Beriabad, Shorja were on territory and on the population more, than the Armenian villages Martuni, Orjonikidze, Bashkand, Ttujur, the Azerbaijan villages did not had separate rural councils, and economy were united, so, for example, Jivikhli with Chaykan, Garagaya with Yanigpeyi, Beriabad with Amirkheyir.

As a result of the nationalist policy spent by the Armenian government in Krasnoselsky district, rights of Azerbaijanians always were restrained.

Under the instruction of the Council of Ministers of Armenian SSR, Ministry of Health of republic under a pretext about centralization of hospitals had deliberately closed all hospitals in villages where lived Azerbaijan population. They pursued two vile purposes here: first, moral pressure upon Azerbaijanians with the purpose of their exile from the primordial grounds and, second, to interfere with demographic growth of Azerbaijanians as growth of Azerbaijanians was higher, than at Armenians. When hospitals and maternity hospitals operated, children's death rate was very little in villages Tohludzha, Chaykand, Golkand and Shorja. After closing of these establishments, children's death rate had increased much more. We shall be convinced of it evidently on an example in a Tokhluja settlement.

In 1981, 30 of born 114 children which had not reached year, and 34 children after one year, died, 1982 accordingly from 91 children-39 and 24, in 1983 from 107 children - 29 and 52, in 1984 from 94 children - 31 and 32, in 1985 from 104 children - 34 and 31.

In 1988, the far-fetched Garabagh problem was reflected and in Krasnoselsky district. Since March of the same year, all Azerbaijanians working in the regional center had been dismissed from work. Delivery of food stuffs to the Azerbaijan villages had practically stopped. Even in the products delivered for school breakfasts, prevented piece of glass. In April of the same year of executives of economy, councils and schools of villages Jil, Ardanish, Aghbulag, Shorja, Tokhluja under the instruction of chairman of KGB of republic of M.Yuzbashyan had collected in Shorju, wanted to shoot and burn out. But on mere chance this vandalism Armenian dashnaks had not come to pass.

The Azerbaijan population of district from March till December (before exile) lived in blockade. They could not go to Yerevan, Sevan, Kirovakan, Dilijan and Ijevan as they provided themselves with the vital goods only from these cities. «Bearded» from Yerevan, Sevan, Dilijan frequently came to district, held a meeting, beat Azerbaijanians and demanded to leave the native centers. In connection with created conditions and a wrong policy of Armenia in relation to MGAR, to the population of district, on June 15, 1988 inhabitants had gathered in Golkand, Jivikhli, Garagaya, Amirkheyirà, Beri-Abada, Yanighpeye, Chaykand and in Shorja village (here the profit from Jil, Ardanish, Shorja, Aghbulag and Tokhluja) had held meetings of protest. The culmination moment has taken place on November 24, 1988. This day Krasnoselky district committee of party had gathered on 21st conference. It proceeded 18 hour. To expel Azerbaijanians from district - there was a unique purpose of conference. The participant of conference, the head of a department of propaganda and propagation of Central Committee KP of Armenia Asatryan, had officially proclaimed from a tribune:

«Armenia belongs to Armenians. Only Armenians should live here. We for death Sumgayit Armenians shall revenge Azerbaijanians of Armenia. The unique purpose of heads of Armenia and Armenian people is to attach Mountainous Garabagh to Armenia».

After conference since November 25, 1988, the armed Armenian gangs had started to attack the Azerbaijan villages. Azerbaijanians at 3 o'clock of nights, having left all property, houses, cattle, etc., ran to Azerbaijan. In severe winter conditions, on roads, children, old men, women, invalids died. Within 3 days (on November, 25-28, 1988) all Azerbaijan population had been expelled from district. Gangsters had seized their houses, the ground, property.

Till 1987-1988 in Krasnoselsky district function 12 (from 20) the Azerbaijan schools. From them, there were 9 high schools and 3 eight years old. After exile of Azerbaijanians of school were closed.
